An old church stands at the foot of the Cerro Estrella in this view of Ixtapalapa, a district on the southeast edge of Mexico City, with agaves growing nearby. The glass negative is attributed to William Henry Jackson, the American photographer who worked extensively in Mexico in the 1880s and 1890s, and the Detroit Publishing Company later issued it as a commercial view. Agave, the source of pulque and mezcal, was a common crop across the central valley, so the plants show as much about local farming as the building does. The hill and the open cultivated ground around it suggest the rural margins of the capital at that time.
