A pair of children stands beside a fence made of cactus in Salamanca, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Living fences like this were a common way to mark property and keep out livestock across the dry Bajío region, where cactus grew more readily than timber. The picture is a large glass dry plate negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company later reproduced in its catalog. The photographer is generally credited to William Henry Jackson, who traveled through Mexico in the 1880s and recorded its towns, rail lines, and everyday scenes.
