Few Aztec sculptures have drawn as much attention as the carved figure shown here, which the record calls Teoyaomiqui but which is better known as Coatlicue. Uncovered in Mexico City in 1790 near the central plaza, the basalt statue depicts a goddess whose skirt of intertwined serpents and necklace of hands and hearts express Aztec ideas about life, death and the earth. The Detroit Photographic Company issued this color photochrom in the late 1800s, when such images gave American viewers a vivid look at Mexico's ancient past.
