From an eastern vantage point, this view records the city of Chihuahua in northern Mexico, the capital of the state of the same name. The two glass negatives are close variants, and one appears to be a cropped and enlarged version of the other, which suggests the photographer worked to refine the composition. W.H. Jackson & Co., the studio credited on the prints, made a large body of views in Mexico during the 1880s and 1890s, when railroad expansion was drawing attention to towns like Chihuahua. The Detroit Publishing Company later issued the image, which helps explain its place in the collection.
