Water carriers, or aguadores, were a familiar sight in Mexico City for centuries, hauling water from public fountains to households that lacked piped supply. This glass-plate negative, made by the photographer William Henry Jackson sometime between 1880 and 1897, records that trade on the city streets at a time when the capital's water system was still uneven. Jackson traveled widely in Mexico during these years, and his views of everyday street life, with their vendors and public fountains, are among the most careful records of the period. The image was later part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large holdings, which were acquired by the Library of Congress.
