Water carriers in Salamanca, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, make the subject here: a figure leading donkeys loaded with water containers, set against the cactus that marks the dry landscape around the town. Photographs like this one were made during the years Mexico was opening to railroads and foreign travelers, and William Henry Jackson, who worked there in the 1880s and 1890s, produced many views of such everyday scenes for tourists and publishers. The glass negative, one of the large-format plates later printed by the Detroit Publishing Company, preserves the working life of a town where carrying water by animal was still a common way of getting it to households.
