Taken from the east, this view of Chihuahua, the capital of the Mexican state of the same name, records the city as it stood in 1891. The picture survives as two closely related glass negatives, one apparently a cropped and enlarged version of the other, both made under the W.H. Jackson & Co. name. Jackson's firm photographed Mexican towns and landscapes for a broad market, and its views later entered the catalog of the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many large-format scenes of the country. The railroad had reached Chihuahua in the early 1880s, which helped connect the city to northern markets and travelers.
