The bronze statue shown here honors Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French officer who founded the settlement of Detroit in 1701 as Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit. The record notes the photograph may show the monument near City Hall, which stood in the civic center area of downtown. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative sometime between 1915 and 1925, when it documented American cities and landmarks for sale as views. The monument reflects how early Detroit's founding was remembered in the city's public spaces.
