Unlike most of the Detroit Publishing Company's views, this plate is a copy of an existing likeness rather than a photograph taken from life, and it shows the composer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, who lived from 1809 to 1847. The company issued many reproductions of artworks and portraits in the early twentieth century, and this negative was likely made between about 1915 and 1925, decades after the sitter's death. Mendelssohn was a central figure of German Romantic music, known for leading the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and for reviving interest in Bach's *St. Matthew Passion* in 1829. The record also notes that the negative was a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
