A workman setting up a telephone instrument is the subject of this glass dry plate negative, which the Detroit Publishing Company made sometime between 1915 and 1925. The record does not name the location or the people, but the catalog notes tie it to a numbered series of the company's negatives, and the plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Detroit Publishing, which was active from the 1890s into the 1920s, documented American towns, industry and everyday work, and this plate offers a glimpse of the telephone network expanding across the country in the years after World War I.
