Among the many Mexico City views in this collection, this glass negative stands out for its close attention to working life in the street: donkeys and peddlers moving through the frame rather than monuments or plazas. The picture was taken sometime between 1880 and 1897, a period when the Mexican capital was growing quickly and its streets still carried heavy traffic in animals, hand-carried goods and street vendors. The attribution to photographer William Henry Jackson rests on a 1898 catalog of his views, which lists a corresponding transparency, and the negative later passed through the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format plates documented towns across North America.
