A dry goods store anchors the left side of this view of Main Street in Summerville, South Carolina, with the railroad station visible in the background. Summerville, a pine-shaded town northwest of Charleston, drew visitors and planters in the late 1800s who sought relief from the Lowcountry's summer heat, and the rail line helped bring them there. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative around 1906 as part of its broad effort to document American towns and streets. The picture offers a plain record of how a small Southern commercial street and its rail connection looked in the early twentieth century.
