Ann Arbor's Main Street is the focus here, photographed around 1908 on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the large format the Detroit Publishing Company favored for its commercial views. The company, based in Detroit, produced and sold tens of thousands of such images of American towns, scenery and streets, often hand-tinted for postcards and travel books. Its Michigan work captures a community in the early automobile era, when storefronts, awnings and streetcar lines still shaped how people moved through downtown. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
