The record identifies this as a glass-plate negative of a Catholic church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, made around 1908, a time when the university town was growing rapidly and its congregations were expanding to serve both residents and students. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this 8 by 10 inch negative, sold views of American towns, churches, and landscapes as postcards and travel books in the early twentieth century. Its large-format plates captured architectural detail that smaller cameras often missed, so the picture is useful for seeing how a church and its streetscape looked before later changes.
