Few photographs show the inside of a turn-of-the-century treatment room, and this one shows a medicine cabinet, washbasins, and a padded table, fittings for the bath and massage services a patient would receive. The record says the room is probably at the Ypsilanti mine bath house in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where visitors came in the early 1900s to bathe in mineral water drawn from underground. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made glass negatives like this one for views and postcards, documented many such resorts and public spaces. Its catalog number and the postcard order note on the record suggest the image was used to sell the bathhouse to visitors.
