A boiler room at the Glazier Stove Company in Chelsea, Michigan, is an unusual subject for a commercial photographer of this period, and it shows the machinery that kept the plant running. Chelsea, a small village about 15 miles west of Ann Arbor, was home to a stove works that made cast-iron heating and cooking stoves for buyers beyond the local area. The Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns, industries and scenery across the country, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. Plates like this one preserve the working interiors of early American factories, where the boilers supplied the steam and heat that factory operations depended on.
