The japanning room at the Glazier Stove Company in Chelsea, Michigan, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass negative. Japanning was the process of coating cast-iron stove parts with a black lacquer-like finish that was baked on to protect the metal from rust and give the stove a polished look. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, factories and landscapes around 1900, made the picture, so it offers a glimpse of a working industrial interior from that period.
