The setting here is the brass foundry of the Glazier Stove Company in Chelsea, Michigan, a small village in Washtenaw County west of Ann Arbor, rather than the stove works as a whole. Foundries like this one melted metal and poured it into molds, producing the cast brass fittings and trim that stove makers needed. The glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns, factories, and industries in the years around 1900. Because the company recorded its work on large plates like this 8 x 10 inch negative, the image gives a detailed view of the workers and equipment inside an early twentieth-century industrial shop.
