Rows of grape vines at Rio Vista on Grosse Ile, an island in the Detroit River south of the city, make up this 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Grape growing was a working part of the farm economy in that part of southeastern Michigan in the early 1900s, supplying nearby markets as Detroit grew. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American farms, towns and landscapes around the turn of the twentieth century, likely made the image between 1900 and 1910. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
