The view is of Rio Vista on Grosse Ile, the largest island in the Detroit River, a short distance downriver from the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 and sold the views as postcards and prints, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. At that time Grosse Ile was a mix of farmland and riverside homes, and its dwellings reflect the country retreats that drew Detroit families to the water. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
