A road curves past a windmill on Grosse Ile, the largest island in the Detroit River, in this view made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1910. The company produced large glass-plate negatives of towns, farms, and country roads across the United States, and it sold the views as prints and postcards for travelers. Windmills were a common sight on Michigan farms of the period, where they pumped water for livestock and fields, so the picture shows a working rural landscape as much as a scenic one.
