The factory in this view is one of the beet sugar works that made the Saginaw Valley a major sugar-producing region in the early 1900s. Growers hauled sugar beets to plants like this one, where they were washed, sliced, and boiled down to raw sugar in a process that ran around the clock during the autumn harvest. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1908, when it was building a large catalog of American towns, factories, and landscapes. Its large-format plates capture the scale of industrial buildings and yard work that smaller cameras often missed.
