South Weadock Avenue in Saginaw, Michigan, is captured here on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative made around 1908, a large format that preserves fine detail in the houses, trees, and street edges. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many such views of American towns and cities in the early twentieth century, made the image, and its catalog number is inscribed on the negative. Saginaw was a busy lumber and manufacturing center on the Saginaw River at the time, and its residential streets like this one show the tree-lined, modest homes that housed its growing working and middle-class population.
