A rear view of the Old Club, photographed looking south, shows a clubhouse among the marshes of the St. Clair Flats in Michigan, where the St. Clair River spreads into a broad, shallow delta before reaching Lake St. Clair. Sporting clubs like this one often stood on raised ground or pilings and were reached by footbridges, serving hunters and anglers drawn to the waterfowl and fish of the flats. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, resorts and landscapes in the early twentieth century.
