A freighter named for Frank J. Hecker sits in the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, in this glass-plate negative from the early 1900s. The St. Marys River locks let lake vessels bypass the rapids that separate Lake Superior from the lower Great Lakes, so ships like this one were a common sight there as iron ore, grain, and other cargo moved east. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this negative, sent photographers across the country to record railroads, towns, and waterways, and its large-format plates still show the scale of the machinery and the ships that depended on it.
