Rather than a live animal, this view shows a timber wolf preserved by taxidermy, as the record's subject headings indicate. The photograph was made at Sault Sainte Marie, the Michigan town on the St. Marys River that carries Lake Superior's water toward the lower Great Lakes, sometime between 1905 and 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide range of town views and curiosities, produced it, and by then wolves had become scarce across Michigan, so a mounted specimen recorded an animal that was growing rare.
