Rather than a live animal or a landscape, this negative records a mounted timber wolf, a taxidermy specimen photographed at Sault Sainte Marie, the twin-city riverfront on the St. Marys River at the Michigan-Ontario border. The Detroit Publishing Company, which took and sold views of American places in the early twentieth century, made pictures like this between about 1905 and 1915. Wolves had been largely driven out of Michigan's settled areas by then, so a preserved animal like this one stood in for a creature many visitors would never see in the wild.
