The steamer Muncy is shown working through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where the St. Marys River drops between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The locks let freighters bypass the rapids and carried iron ore, grain, and other bulk cargo that fed American industry in the early twentieth century. The record lists the scene as winter, when ice and cold made lock operations especially difficult. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of towns, waterways, and industry across the country, made this glass negative, which is dated only tentatively to about 1904.
