A fountain set among the paths of South Canal Park gives this c1905 view its particular focus, placing the scene in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The town grew up around the rapids of the St. Marys River, where canals and locks let ships pass between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes, so the park sat in a busy shipping community. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American towns for tourists and postcards, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative. Its sharp detail captures the fountain and the landscaped grounds typical of civic parks of the period.
