The Iroquois Hotel stood in Sault Ste. Marie, a Michigan town on the St. Marys River that links Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Around 1905, a hotel in a busy river port like this would have housed travelers arriving by rail and steamer, along with the engineers, shippers, and tourists drawn by the canal and locks. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns, resorts, and landmarks for sale as postcards and souvenir views. Its glass-plate negatives give the building a crisp, detailed look that shows how a commercial hotel presented itself to the public in the early twentieth century.
