A flag-lined parade moves down Ashmun Street in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, in this glass-plate negative from about 1905, when the town was marking the St. Marys Falls Ship Canal that opened in 1855. The canal bypassed the rapids of the St. Marys River and gave Great Lakes shipping a route around the falls, which made the town a center of commerce and industry. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns and landscapes from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced this view. Its many American flags and the crowded procession show how such civic occasions were displayed in small Midwestern cities.
