A reviewing stand marks this view of the Saint Marys Canal celebration at Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, where the St. Marys River drops over rapids that once blocked boats moving between Lake Superior and the lower lakes. The canal, opened in 1855, let vessels bypass that stretch, and by the early 1900s it carried heavy traffic in iron ore and grain. Taken around 1905, the picture likely records a celebration of the canal's first half-century, with steamboats and spectators on hand. The Detroit Publishing Company made such views on glass negatives to promote American travel and industry.
