Two granite lighthouse towers rise above the rocks on Thacher Island, a small island off Rockport on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. The record spells the name "Thatcher's," but the subject heading uses "Thacher," the form the island is known by today. The island's twin lights, first established in the eighteenth century, guided ships past the dangerous ledges of the Massachusetts coast. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American scenery and landmarks for travel publications.
