The Colonial Arms stood at Eastern Point, the rocky headland on the eastern edge of Gloucester, Massachusetts, where summer visitors gathered around 1905 to escape city heat. Resort hotels like this one catered to well-to-do families drawn by sea air, harbor views and the rugged Cape Ann coastline. The Detroit Publishing Company made the picture as part of its large body of photographs of American towns, resorts and scenery, many of them sold to travelers and publishers. The glass negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado and reached the Library of Congress in 1949.
