Gloucester's high school, photographed around 1906, stands in a city best known for its fishing fleet on Cape Ann, the rocky peninsula north of Boston. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1890 and the early 1920s documented towns, landscapes and institutions across the United States. Large glass plates like this one captured fine detail, making such views useful for studying early twentieth-century New England school buildings and their surroundings. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
