A fisherman from Cape Ann, photographed on the working waterfront at Gloucester, Massachusetts, is the subject here, and that location is what sets this glass negative apart from the many harbor views the Detroit Publishing Company made in New England. Gloucester was one of the country's leading fishing ports in the early 1900s, with schooners fishing the Grand Banks and wharves crowded with gear, salt, and catch. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, produced large numbers of photographs of towns and workers for travel and commercial sales, and its plates were often hand-tinted for publication. The negative's cracked and taped upper left corner is a reminder of its age and fragility.
