Surf pounding the rocky shore at Bass Rocks, on the Atlantic side of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is the focus of this view of Cape Ann's coast. The glass negative was made around 1905 or 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed scenic places across the country and sold the views to travelers. It was listed in the company's 1906 catalog P and came to the Library of Congress in 1949 as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
