A glass-plate negative of Concord High School in Concord, Massachusetts, this view dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, a period when towns across New England were building or expanding secondary schools to serve growing numbers of students. It was made as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large-format survey of American towns and landscapes, a commercial project that sold views to publishers, travel markets, and households. Concord, already known for its literary and Revolutionary War history, drew many visitors, so the company's interest in the town is understandable. The negative later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado and was given to the Library of Congress in 1949.
