The soldiers' monument in South Hadley, Massachusetts, a college town in the Connecticut River valley, honors local men who served in the Civil War. Towns across New England raised memorials like this in the decades after 1865, often on a green or in a park where residents gathered for Memorial Day and other civic occasions. The view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format pictures of towns, parks and landscapes that were sold to travelers and promoters around the turn of the twentieth century. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative, dated between 1900 and 1910, records how the monument and its setting looked in those years.
