A shaded walkway on the grounds of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, sets this view apart from the college's more familiar building portraits. The school grew out of Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, founded by Mary Lyon in 1837, and it later became a college. The Detroit Publishing Company made views like this one around 1908 for travelers and collectors, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, cracked along its left side, is part of that large-format record.
