Among the Detroit Publishing Company's many New England views, this one turns to a lake on the grounds of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The college traces its roots to Mary Lyon's seminary, founded in 1837, and by about 1900 its landscaped campus drew visitors and was a common subject for travel imagery. The print was made by the photochrom process, a method of multistage color lithography that rendered photographs in soft, painted-looking hues. It comes from an album the company assembled as a catalog for its office, so it shows how the firm presented American places to a wide audience.
