A Chicago & North Western train, hauling locomotive 251, runs along the shore of Goose Lake near Negaunee in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Negaunee grew up around iron mining on the Marquette Range, and railroads like the North Western carried ore and supplies in and out of the district, so the train here stands for the economy that shaped the town. The picture was made around 1898 by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose large glass-plate views of American towns, lakes, and rail lines were widely sold as prints and souvenirs. The 18 by 22 inch negative gives the scene unusual detail.
