Trees line the shore of Lake Waban on the campus of Wellesley College, a women's college west of Boston, in this glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company. The company, based in Detroit, produced large numbers of views of American towns, landscapes and institutions around the turn of the twentieth century, often sold as postcards and travel prints. Wellesley, founded in 1870, was known for its landscaped grounds, and the lake was a central feature of the campus, where students rowed and walked. The date on the record is an estimate, placed around 1908.
