Framed by a row of coconut palms, this view looks out over Lake Worth toward the Palm Beach shoreline, with the trunks and fronds serving as a natural frame for the water beyond. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of photochrom and black-and-white views of American resorts and scenic places around the turn of the twentieth century, sent photographers to Florida as the state's winter tourist trade grew after railroad magnate Henry Flagler extended his line down the east coast. Palm Beach was becoming a fashionable winter destination, and images like this one helped promote the region to visitors and prospective settlers. The glass negative records a landscape that was then still closely tied to its tropical vegetation.
