Flagler's Royal Poinciana Hotel, shown here from the southwest, was one of the largest wooden hotels in the world when it opened on the shore of Lake Worth in 1894. Its long verandas and rows of wheeled chairs, which the record lists as a subject, reflect the leisure life that drew wealthy winter visitors to Palm Beach in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, specialized in views like this of resorts, towns and landscapes across the country. The hotel was demolished in 1935, so this view is now one of the clearer records of how the resort looked at its height.
