Seen from Lake Worth, the Royal Poinciana Hotel rises on the Palm Beach shore, with steam yachts on the water in front of it. Henry Flagler, who extended his railroad down Florida's east coast, built the hotel in 1894, and for years it was among the largest wooden hotels in the world. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its travel views, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1900 to 1905, when wealthy winter visitors from the North were arriving by train in growing numbers.
