The Long Beach Hotel stood on the barrier beach of Long Island's south shore, in a town that had grown from a rail-served summer resort into a destination for city visitors arriving from Brooklyn and Manhattan. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-scale photographic survey of American scenery, towns and tourist sites in the years around 1900. Its era was a period when railroads and steamships were pulling vacationers to the seaside, and hotels like this one were the centerpieces of that trade. The negative's catalog number and the Library of Congress's collection record show how these views were preserved and kept in circulation.
