The Hotel Metropole stood on the waterfront at Avalon, the resort town on Santa Catalina Island off the Southern California coast, and this glass negative captures its beach with bathers in the water and on the sand. Avalon grew into a popular seaside getaway in the early 1900s, drawing steamer passengers from Los Angeles who came for swimming, fishing and island excursions. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made and sold views of American resorts and landscapes during these years, documented places like this for travel promotion. The "Bay View" sign on the hotel's right side helps pin down the building's name and its role as a fixture of the waterfront.
