The Hotel Green was one of the large resort hotels in Pasadena, a Southern California town that drew wealthy visitors from the East and Midwest during the winter months. This 1899 view is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed hotels, resorts, and scenic sites across the United States for travel promotion. Pasadena's growth as a winter destination followed the arrival of railroad lines in the 1880s, and hotels like this one were built to house guests who came for the mild climate and the orange groves. The negative is a useful record of how these establishments presented themselves to prospective travelers at the turn of the century.
