The Stockton Hotel stood in Cape May, New Jersey, one of the oldest seaside resorts in the country, where summer visitors came for the sea air and the grand hotels along the shore. Resort hotels of this kind, with long porches and broad frontage, were the social centers of these towns in the years before 1915, when railroad travel brought more families to the coast. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, landmarks and resorts and sold the views to travelers and publishers. Its survival as a negative preserves the fine detail the photographer recorded at the site.
